Counselling FAQ

What is counselling/psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are two terms that are often used the describe the same process of speaking with someone who is trained to help with difficulties you may be having in life. The emphasis is on making you feel safe and able to speak about what can be very painful or personal issues. This is achieved by the therapist aiming to have a trusting, honest and accepting relationship with the client.

In general, counselling tends to describe a shorter course and psychotherapy a longer more in-depth treatment, although this isn't always the case. Therapists train in different 'models' of therapy that influence how they work.

How long will I see a counsellor/therapist?

There are no set rules. We initially offer up to 12 sessions with the option of reducing or extending this if needed. Much of this will depend on how long YOU need to deal with an issue or explore what is troubling you. We will discuss this with you during your initial assessment and at any point during your therapy.

How much will it cost?

  1. We offer a free initial assessment of half an hour then ask for £30 per session thereafter.
  2. We have a limited number of free sessions for those on benefits.
  3. We ask for a £10 cancellation fee for any appointments that are cancelled less that 12 hours before they are due to take place.

What type of issues would a person see a counsellor/therapist about?

There are no fixed rules to this and you don't have to be in crisis to come to therapy. Some people come about a specific issue, such as a relationship breakdown or with anxiety or depression. Others don't have a particular issue in mind but feel they are not where they want to be in their lives and have a sense that something is wrong.

Many clients focus on self-development and understanding themselves better. They might want to explore why they react to certain situations in a particular manner.
