SmartLiving volunteers commit experiences to paper
Published on January 18 2010
November 2009 Falkirk’s SmartLiving Peer Education Project has launched a new book featuring life stories and poems penned by the project’s young volunteers.
The book is called ‘First Tenancy – Which Way Should I Go?’. Its content was produced during sessions with Falkirk Council’s Adult Literacy Team, when each volunteer wrote about their experiences of homelessness and/or having their first tenancy.
Several of the volunteers will read their work from the book on Friday, in front of Falkirk Provost Pat Reid and around 90 other guests.
SmartLiving Project Co-ordinator Irene Blackburn said: “The volunteers worked really hard to put their personal experiences down on paper. The result is a book that contains personal accounts that are at times surprising, funny, sad, moving and enlightening.”
The SmartLiving volunteers plan to use the book during the housing and homelessness educational sessions they deliver to their peers in schools, youth groups, careers centres and other places where young people meet in and around Falkirk.
